JALGAON JN - JL

"Jalgaon" () is a city in western India. The city is located in northern Maharashtra, and serves as the administrative headquarter of the Jalgaon district. Jalgaon is nicknamed "Banana city" as the region contributes approximately two third of Maharashtra's banana production. it is also known for the gold production. Jalgaon is supposed to have the purest form of gold which is sold at a great price, which is how it came to be known as the Gold City (Suvarn-nagari).

"Jalgaon" was divided in 1911, with East Khandesh covering the territory that is now Jalgaon. After the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, East Khandesh became part of Bombay State. Four years later, in 1960, it became part of the newly formed Maharashtra and was renamed Jalgaon.

Jalgaon city is about 225 meters above sea level. The Girna River flows through the western part of the city.

The Khandesh region, which covers Jalgaon and goes up to the Deccan region, was controlled by the Faruqi dynasty from the 1300s to 1600s. Before the rule of the Faruqi dynasty, it is believed that much of Jalgaon district was ruled. Khandesh was later governed by several leaders and dynasties including the Satavahanas, Virsen, Chalukya dynasty, Yadava dynasty, and the Yawan dynasty, before Alaud-din-Khilji, Mohammad Tughlak and the Nizam of Hyderabad ruled the region. The Marathas then ruled much of the region, and Sardar Tulajirao Bhoite, a Maratha leader, established the town. The Holkars next took control of the region before being they got into a battle with the British. Khandesh was later divided into two - East Khandesh, which is the region of modern-day Jalgaon, and West Khandesh. After Independence, East Khandesh became a part of the state of Bombay and later in 1960; Jalgaon was reorganised to become a district.

In Jalgaon city, people of Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jewish, Christian etc are living. There are also Kunbi Patil, Mali, Maratha,Wani ,Kathar Wani, Lingayat Samaj, Dhangar as well as tribal tribes of Bhil, Pawra, Tokre-Koli.

Marathi is the major spoken language along with Hindi. Many speak a dialect called Ahirani instead of Marathi.

Shri Ram Rathosav was started by Appa Maharaj in 1872. For 2 years, this chariot passed from Shriram Temple to Jalgaon, from Bhavani Mata Mandir and reached Lalsha Baba Dargah again near Shriram Temple.In 2013, the route of Rathutsav was expanded. This route is four kilometers long. At present, Jalgaon People's Bank, Lalsha Baba are also included on the chariot route through Ghanekar Chowk.The height of the chariot is 5 feet.

Jalgaon has the North Maharashtra's biggest auditorium named after Chatrapati Sambhaji Raje.It has a seating capacity of about 1200.Along with it there are many small auditoriums where dramas are performed.Parivartan is one of the group who perform drama and poetry.

Jalgaon is famous for its Bharit and Kalnyachi bhakri, as well as Shev Bhaji. Also known for Varan Batti and Vangyachi bhaji during the festival of the Hindu Leva Patidar community.

According to the 2011 Indian census, the city of Jalgaon had a population of 4,60,228, with an average literacy rate of 87.28%. With male literacy being 90.91, with female literacy being 83.37.

Jalgaon is a tier 3 city and the administrative authority is run by the Municipal Corporation. The administrative building of the Municipal Corporation is 17 storeys. The building is named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

An IPS officer appointed by the Home Ministry of the State is the chief of the Jalgaon Police Department. Therefore, the police system here comes under the authority of the Home Ministry of the State of Maharashtra.Currently, Punjabrao Ugale is the SP of Jalgaon.

North Maharashtra University was established in the city of Jalgaon on 15 August 1989. Government Polytechnic Jalgaon was established in 1960. The district is also home to schools and colleges of the Khandesh Education Society and Maratha Vidya Prasarak Mandal and President College of Hotel Management.
