Historically the area was ruled by the Pandyan Dynasty this is not the head quarters of any king but was ruled by Pandiyas and later by the King Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram. According to the ancient epic Ramayana, Lord Rama started his battle against Ravana at Sethu Canal, which is 45 minutes travel from here. Paramakudi consists of two formerly separate settlements, Paramakudi and Emaneswaram, which merged to form the present municipal town in 1964

Paramakudi is located at 9.544°N 78.591°E.It has an average elevation of 41 metres (133ft). Paramakudi is 70 km from Madurai and 38 km from Ramanathapuram (Ramnad).

Paramakudi is well connected by rail and bus to other cities also public and private bus services available in this city. The town is located in south east Tamil Nadu and connected by National Highway 49 (India) to Madurai from Rameswaram. There are direct trains to Chennai, Rameswaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore, Tirupati, Okhha, Bhubaneswar and Varanasi. The nearest airport is Madurai Airport, about 83 km away.

According to the 2011 census of India, Paramakudi had a population of 95,579 with a sex ratio of 966 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929. 9,292 were under the age of six, constituting 4,800 males and 4,492 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 14.5% and .08% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 81.44%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.

According to the religious census of 2011, Paramakudi had 86.55% Hindus, 9.2% Muslims, 4.11% Christians, 0.01% Sikhs and 0.12% following other religions.

Paramakudi is birthplace of the prominent film personalities;Indian film actor Kamal Haasan and his family; Chandrahasan and Charuhasan who is also a film actor, film producer is his brother. Suhasini Maniratnam was born to actor Charuhasan, in Paramakudi, into the prominent Haasan family.

Vinod Raj (Tamil actor) was an Indian film actor, who has worked on Tamil films. He is also renowned for being the father of leading Indian actor Vikram (actor), his native place also Paramakudi.
