As of 2011, the town had a population of 70,180.Pollachi is one of the biggest Markets in Asia and the cattle market of Pollachi is considered as the largest in southern India. Pollachi is often known as 'Coconut Capital' of Tamil Nadu, where coconut exports and coir mills flourish Pollachi is the oldest capital of King mudi konda cholan, it is called at that time as 'Mudi konda chola nallur',It is also known as Porulaatchi,pullachy and known for its natural chill climate. Pollachi is one of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Constituencies. Pollachi Parliamentary Constituency is one of the 39 Parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

Pollachi was known as ''Porul Aatchi'' in Tamil language which means "gifted with wealth" and later became ''Pollachi''. It was also known as Mudi Konda Chola Nallur during the period of the Cholas.

The average literacy of the city was 82.15%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.

The economy of the town is predominantly dependent on agriculture. Coconut, jaggery, vegetables and cattle contribute to the agricultural output. There are also coir producing units with raw materials sourced from local farms. Vanilla is also cultivated in certain locations. Pollachi is also a popular movie shooting location for the Kollywood owing to its scenic Pollachi is known for its traditional foods, culture, people and their kindness.

Pollachi has schools which follow different curriculam such as CBSE, ICSE and state board. Proximity to the educational hub of Coimbatore aids in higher education.
